If the wall charger has a USB-C output and you attach a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or cable, the USB-A device will only charge if the charger supports sending power in a way that the USB-A side can use. Many USB-C chargers are designed primarily for USB-C Power Delivery (USB PD) handshakes, while many USB-A devices expect the older USB-A charging signals (like 5V standard USB charging, or vendor-specific fast-charge signaling).
Basic charging at 5V is the most common “safe bet.” If the charger can provide a default 5V output without requiring a USB-C PD negotiation, a USB-A device will typically charge—just often at normal speed rather than fast charging. This is common for simpler accessories (Bluetooth earbuds, small gadgets, older phones) that don’t need specialized signaling to accept power.
If the charger is “PD-only” on its USB-C port, a passive USB-C-to-USB-A adapter may not trigger any output, or it may fall back to a minimal 5V/0.5A–1A mode. Also, many USB-A fast-charging standards (like Qualcomm Quick Charge) rely on USB-A data-line communication that a basic USB-C-to-USB-A setup may not replicate. In those cases, the device may charge slowly even though the charger is rated at 65W.
A 65W rating doesn’t mean a USB-A device will receive 65W. USB PD negotiates higher voltages (like 9V, 12V, 15V, 20V) with compatible devices; most USB-A devices won’t request or accept those profiles through a simple adapter. Stick to reputable adapters/cables, and avoid unknown “converter” dongles that claim to add fast-charge features without clear specs.
