A metal-and-leather tray looks best when it’s cleaned gently and kept as dry as possible. The goal is to remove dust and smudges from the metal while avoiding over-wetting, harsh cleaners, and abrasion on the leather insert or wrap.
1) Empty and dry-dust first. Remove jewelry or accessories. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the entire tray, paying attention to seams where grit can scratch metal or grind into leather.
2) Protect the leather before wiping metal. If the leather is close to the metal surface you need to polish, cover it with a clean, dry cloth or painter’s tape applied lightly (avoid sticky tape directly on delicate leather finishes).
3) Clean the metal with a barely damp cloth. Lightly moisten a microfiber cloth with water and a drop of mild dish soap, then wring it until it’s almost dry. Wipe the metal only, using gentle strokes. Immediately follow with a second dry cloth to remove all moisture.
4) Spot-clean the leather only if needed. For small marks, use a leather cleaner made for finished leather on a soft cloth (not directly on the leather). Dab and wipe lightly; don’t scrub. Avoid vinegar, alcohol, bleach, and “all-purpose” sprays, which can strip finish and discolor leather.
5) Condition sparingly. If the leather feels dry, apply a tiny amount of leather conditioner, then buff off any residue. Too much conditioner can darken leather or leave an oily feel that attracts dust.
6) Dry fully before use. Let the tray air-dry away from heat and sun. Don’t use a hair dryer, which can warp leather and stress adhesives.
